NORML Friends:
I am writing in response to the posting on DRC-talk a few days ago by Steve Young concerning fundraising for the North American Industrial Hemp Council.

Why the NAIHC is looking for members among the participants of the DRC-talk list is beyond me. The NAIHC Board of Directors has decided to terminate any of its members who even so much as express an opinion on the marijuana issue. The only candidates for NAIHC membership on this list are the government agents who lurk here.

The NAIHC recently expelled Andrew Graves, a Kentucky farmer, because he hired a NORML Legal Committee member to conduct the Kentucky Hemp Growers Cooperative civil suit against the DEA. David Morris, of the Institute for Local Self Reliance, was kicked out because he wrote a
public opinion column about medical marijuana.

Last week the NAIHC board voted to terminate the membership of The Ohio Hempery, Inc. solely on the basis that its CEO, Don Wirtshafter, is a member of the NORML Board of Directors. Don was one of the pioneer hemp advocates and has been a responsible voice for hemp farming for over ten years.

The action is intended to split the hemp community in an effort to convince the DEA that the remaining hemp advocates will not push the "marijuana agenda."

You should ask some basic questions before supporting an organization this paranoid about marijuana decriminalization.

Specifically, you should ask directly whether they accept members who also support the decriminalization or legalization of marijuana for medical or recreational use.

And you should ask if they support the current drug war against marijuana smokers.

It is understandable that some organizations wish to put some political distance between themselves and the public debate over recreational use, but they should not seek to legalize marijuana (hemp) for industrial use on the backs of recreational smokers.

Nor should they push their narrow agenda by trashing the good work of other organizations. A neutral position is one thing; a position hostile to smokers and supportive of the drug war is quite another.

Before providing financial support to the NAIHC, these questions should be asked and answered.

North American Industrial Hemp Council is not a friend of reform.

Please pass this along back to Keith and the groups as well. I contacted NAHIC in May to try and get literature about Industrial Hemp to pass out at our Hempfest in Jacksonville, they asked me, "Will you be discussing other uses of cannabis?"

I advised them that we would be discussing all aspects of the plant, and they told me they did not want to be associated with me or my group or a "Hempfest" at all these guys are a bunch of fakers and need NO support from the drug policy reform community at all.
