Last week the NAIHC board voted to terminate the membership of The Ohio Hempery, Inc. solely on the basis that its CEO, Don Wirtshafter, is a member of the NORML Board of Directors. Don was one of the pioneer hemp advocates and has been a responsible voice for hemp farming for over ten years.

The action is intended to split the hemp community in an effort to convince the DEA that the remaining hemp advocates will not push the "marijuana agenda."

You should ask some basic questions before supporting an organization this paranoid about marijuana decriminalization.

Specifically, you should ask directly whether they accept members who also support the decriminalization or legalization of marijuana for medical or recreational use.

And you should ask if they support the current drug war against marijuana smokers.

It is understandable that some organizations wish to put some political distance between themselves and the public debate over recreational use, but they should not seek to legalize marijuana (hemp) for industrial use on the backs of recreational smokers.

Nor should they push their narrow agenda by trashing the good work of other organizations. A neutral position is one thing; a position hostile to smokers and supportive of the drug war is quite another.

Before providing financial support to the NAIHC, these questions should be asked and answered.
