During the weekend, Columbia played host to the MO NORML/MO Cannabis Coalition State Conference, where Irvin Rosenfeld spoke in support of reforming marijuana laws. Rosenfeld can smoke pot legally, any place and any time, and has been doing just that for the past 22 years. As one of seven medical patients in the country prescribed 12 cannabis cigarettes a day by the federal government, he spoke at the daylong event on Saturday to give his views on medical marijuana. “I have not taken any other pills for 15 years,” Rosenfeld said. “All I use is 12 cigarettes provided by the government.” He also spoke on campus Friday in Hulston Hall at an “ask the experts” session. The events came on the heels of the Nov. 2 election, where two propositions on the Columbia ballot will deal with marijuana law. Proposition 1 seeks to allow seriously ill patients to use medical marijuana without fear of being arrested, while also protecting the doctor who prescribed the treatment. Proposition 2 would make marijuana laws the “lowest law of enforcement priority,” by reducing the penalty for a misdemeanor amount down to $250. Howard Wooldridge, a founding member of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, said he believed decision of whether a patient needs medical marijuana should be handled in a doctor’s office, not a government building. “We believe all drugs should be treated as a public-health manner,” he said. “Why not let the doctors and professionals who know how to deal with the problem deal with it?” Wooldridge spent 15 years as a police officer and recently rode a horse across the country while wearing a shirt that read “Cops want to legalize pot: Ask me why.” He said that for all the time an officer spends with his head down in a car looking for just a small amount of pot, drunk drivers are speeding past them, putting others’ lives at risk. Keith Stroup, the founder of NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws), has been using marijuana since he was a freshman in college. “There is nothing wrong with responsible use,” he said. “Do not vote for a candidate who wants to lock up marijuana users.” Stroup also brought up a national poll by CNN that said 46 percent of adults have tried pot at some point in their life. “In a few years, a majority of people in this country will have tried it at least once,” Stroup said. | I wish this Rosenfeld would get himself arrested on purpose to prove a point.If he was to get arrested would the government have to go to court? Would this open up the whole medical marijuana issue? Please give me some feed back. I come to this sight every day and I want to thank all the posters here, there's to many to name but as a shop owner I thank you all for your insight.You people are so intelligent and are standing up for what is right.
