Cannabis News Stop the Drug War!
Israel To Soothe Trauma With Marijuana

medical Jerusalem -- Israeli soldiers traumatised by battle with the Palestinians have a new, unconventional weapon to exorcise their nightmares -- marijuana.

Under an experimental programme, Delta-9 tetrohydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient found in the cannabis plant, will be administered to 15 soldiers over the next several months in an effort to fight post-traumatic stress disorder.

Raphael Mechoulam of Jerusalem's Hebrew University, the chief researcher behind a project he described as a world-first, said the chemical could trick the brain into suppressing unwanted memories.

For soldiers haunted by flashbacks of traumatic battle experiences, he said, the drug, administered in liquid form, could be the answer to hundreds of sleepless nights.

"It helps them sleep better, for one thing. These people often wake up from nightmares, and experience sweating or hallucinations," Mechoulam told Reuters.

The army said civilian and military committees had approved the experiment.

Millions of people, mainly war veterans, suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, a psychiatric condition that can develop after experiencing life-threatening events.

MEDICAL USES

Doctors already use so-called medical marijuana to treat nausea among cancer patients, appetite loss among AIDS sufferers and neurological disorders such as Tourette's Syndrome, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis.

However, Mechoulam said this is the first time THC would be used to treat post-traumatic stress.

Some of the soldiers slated to take part in the experiment came down with the disorder after experiences confronting a Palestinian uprising which began in 2000. Others are veterans of past Israeli-Arab wars.

Symptoms can be eased by painkillers and psychological treatment but THC could speed up the process, or at least reduce the number of traumatic episodes, said Mechoulam. He was among a group of researchers that first isolated THC in 1964.

"If given two or three times a day, it lasts about six hours at a time," Mechoulam said at his office in the university's School of Pharmacy.

The effects of THC on stress were first discovered by Germany's Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in 2002. Scientists tested it on mice and found THC lessened their fear of electric shocks, because it suppressed their memory of them.

PERMITS REQUIRED

Israel's army usually frowns on cannabis and soldiers caught smoking it can expect to be stripped of their ranks or thrown into military jail. Special government authorisation was needed for the experiment.

"A medical permit is needed for what is called 'compassionate use' of marijuana, which means it's used to treat illnesses ... when nothing else seems to work," Mechoulam said.

Smoking marijuana, as an estimated eight percent of Israelis aged 18-40 do, does not act as a medicine on its own, he said.

"The drug is only approved for medical use, and its active curing ingredient, THC, must be isolated and used in medical treatment," he said.

Instead of smoking the drug, soldiers will drink THC dissolved in olive oil.

"We prefer to give it under the tongue rather than through a pill because it's more effective. I hope (the drug) will help at least part of the time, so they can sleep better more often," Mechoulam said.

If successful, the treatment could be tried elsewhere.

The U.S. National Centre for Mental Health says that 30 percent of Americans who spent time in war zones have experienced the disorder, dubbed "shell shock" by veterans of World War One.

Surveys conducted by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington in 2003 found that nearly a fifth of U.S. soldiers returning from the war in Iraq may suffer from the disorder.

A million Vietnam War veterans are believed to have developed it as well.

A New York Academy of Medicine poll found that levels of post-traumatic stress disorder doubled among New York City residents a few weeks after the September 11 attacks.

Drones
I suspect it is these same drones that fired a missile in Gaza this week. I wonder how much the retrofit cost is to arm the AZ drones. Its spooky the tools America is turning on itself in pursuit of "Homeland Security".

Off Topic: Israeli Drones Used by AZ Border Patrol
Israeli Drones Used by Arizona Border Police

By Amnon Barzilai, Haaretz Correspondent

October 5, 2004

Authorities in the southwestern state of Arizona have begun employing Israeli-built Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in border security, rescue and drug interdiction missions along the border with Mexico. The aircraft are being used by the state of Arizona in a special operation aimed at tightening security along the 2,000-mile Mexican border. According to a report published by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, since June, Israeli-made UAV's have assisted in the seizure of a quarter ton of marijuana in Arizona.

Two Hermes 450 UAVs, developed and manufactured by Elbit Systems, have logged over 477 flight hours in missions along the U.S.-Mexico border, including several rescue missions.

According to the report, the drones identified illegal immigrants attempting to cross into the U.S., and in several cases have helped deter smugglers.

I think you're right. I believe it's called "eustress". Or used to be.

Stress hammers me...it has all my life...starting with the childhood tummy aches and going on and on...migraines, stress induced psoriasis, adult onset acne...hair loss...heart palpitations...nausea and vomiting..."crawling" leg nerves...IBS...the whole nine yards.

I'm good now and happy as a lark...cept for the neck and throat pain I'm having right now. But there is even a bit of eustress with that...I get more time on the puter. No one wants me to burst an artery...I have too many duties. I really think the Doc will give me a clean bill of health this week, though. Just stress or a pinched nerve or something.

My husband wanted me to do a "walk in" at the clinic today, he is so worried...but I have a grandchild to attend to today.

Deny Aid To Israel! Wrong Message To Our Youth!
I am going to be writing forthwith to my Repignican Congresscritter to demand an end of aid to Israel. These people cannot be on our side if they are planning on giving the most dangerous drug (just ask Johnny Pee) out there to their citizen soldiers. Just think of the awful message this action sends to our childrun.

If "compassionate" and "conservatism" are defined by denying medical users in America relief from what ails them and denying states their constitutional latitude to work out medical considerations independent of the federal nanny, then we must insist our allies get it right and toe the line with us. "Y'er either with us or with the terrorists," as the saying goes. Israel is way out of line in giving a friendly nod to the devils own weed. Cut 'em off. Let 'em fund their own way with these devilish experiments.

On the other hand, if this isn't sufficient cause to stop aid to Israel, maybe we ought to honestly look at the wherefore and howcome behind their decision, along with the rationale behind the numerous state actions in this regard. A good place to start would be a reading of the medical literature and reconsideration of "NO" votes on the Rohrabacher/Hinchey admendment, or initiate a change from schedule I to reflect reality with respect to cannabis, rather than continuing on the blind opposition to any rational thought on the matter, the approach that should have us canceling aid to the Israelis.

Cheers

?

This list I get in my e-mail. I have it sent in a digest form. It has around 3800 registered people. I have never posted but they report on concerts and other music too. These are serious music people. They won't allow politics because it is a World Wide List and people don't want to read about American politics so it stays on topic. I post on a message board and the host runs a tight ship and it stays on topic very well. We kid but no politics except it's going to be hard because of Neil and Pegi surprising everyone by joining the Vote For Change Tour. I know some people will be very angry with him for his stand. Neil fans are serious Neil fans it seems.

Neil Young ...
FOM, I am a long-term Neil Young Fan.

Mi espousa and I saw him with Linda Rondstadt in OKC 'round 72 or so. I thought Neil released a live album later of concert cuts and included one from the show in OKC. What's your best resource about his music? Care to share it?

It sounds like "racehorse anxiety" which is the same adrenaline stress, but instead of being dis-tress (stress viewed negatively) it is eu-stress (stress viewed positively, coined by Hans Selye, author of Stress without Distress, 1974 hb, 1975 pb). Or as Baba Ram Dass says in Be Here Now, 1976 pb, "Do you do it from 'ungh' or do you do it from 'ahhh'?"

I have found something that I'm not sure is right or not but I'll throw it out to you. I am excited and bubbly because of Neil and Peggi Young joining the tour and I'm sure my blood pressure is up but I'm not having any chest pains. When it isn't happy stress is when I started getting chest pains. I guess maybe stress isn't all bad as long as the stress lifts the person up. I don't know but so far that's how it seems to work for me. I wonder if that's true or not.

I remember, it was a shock in the 1980s when the hippie counterculture split into left and right. But it was inevitable. I think it's kind of recombining now over marijuana prohibition.

I hope you are ok. I know what it's like to mind the pressure of this whole thing. When we get older stress can be a real killer and we all are stressed out. Maybe you shouldn't get Steve Earles music right now. He sings about the death penalty and I can't listen to that one. I only watched a little of SNL. It wasn't very good in my opinion. The opening was ok because it was about the debates. They did make fun of Bush and how he acted during the debate but they also made fun of Kerry too. They didn't go off the deep end.

I am so excited because Neil Young made a surprise performance at the Vote for Change Tour last night in Toledo. I've read that it was wonderful and what a surprise. I think I have this right. Neil and his wife Pegi sang Harvest Moon. That's such a beautiful song and even Peter Frampton was there. I know Neil got in trouble with his fans years ago for endorsing Reagan and I think he hasn't endorsed anyone since then until now. My day is so happy. I was wondering what he was going to do and he did it!

I haven't ordered the Steve Earle music yet. Some of the lyrics look that they are going to be real downers and I'm worried about my carotid artery and heart. The artery hurts bad and I can get no relief from the pain and I fear something is about to blow up. I go to the Doc next week and when I get an all clear on the artery, which hurts awful and my heart, too has taken spells of frantic and hard beating when I get upset in the least, then maybe I can take a chance. The ulcers are better and I've lost weight...which is good...but if it's not one thing it's something else.

Maybe it's just a pinched nerve and not the artery at all. It feels like it's all coming from the artery though.

Did they have a great political opening on SNL? My husband wouldn't watch it becaue he didn't want to see Bush made fun of and he was sure it would happen.

Did it?

The tricky thing about trauma
Trauma creates its own set of meanings and interpretations of the universe.

People can become dependent on a traumatic outlook, and come to regard people who do not share that outlook as being disloyal, threatening or even treasonous.

A medication that relieves a traumatic outlook could cause a lot of proboems for its beneficiaries.

And thus ... here we are.

Am I right, Dr. Russo? Are there not huge unspoken political and social implications to this scientific work?

re PTSD and gonepostal's comment
I was just thinking at work last night how traumatic it is for children to see their parents carted away to be caged like animals,

how traumatic it is for children to be removed from the families they love,

how traumatic it is for workers (and their families) to be laid-off and to see their jobs shipped to Mexico Peru India or China, to work for minimum wage or frozen wages while all the time the cost of living rises faster,

how traumatic that the returning veterans of Vietnam were ignored, forced to cope on their own with injuries and stress in a country that wanted to forget the war ever happened (unhealthy attitude, alcoholic thinking),

how traumatic that current veterans are having their benefits cut after their brave service to their country,

how traumatic that the US President lied to the American people about Weapons of Mass Destruction in order to justify the invasion of Iraq and the subsequent death and injury of American soldiers and contractors and Iraq citizens,

how traumatic to be awakened in the middle of the night by pot-sniffing cops,

how traumatic that medical marijuana [sic] exemptees have to face the uncertainty of arrest and the possibilty of laced medicine from black market dealers in addition to the suffering of the illness for which they are taking medical cannnabis

how traumatic that Health Canada has been stalling and bungling the supply of medical cannabis and the authorizations to use the medicine

how traumatic that the current government of Canada still views cannabis use as a criminal offense and wants to apply alternative sanctions to a victimless 'crime' while cracking down hard on supply ensuring that it will remain to the hands of black market profiteers.

The world needs more cannabis. Send pot to every man and woman in Canada and USA and let them decide what they want to do with it. An informed voter is a better policy-maker.

Pain and Loss
We all have, and will continue to experience pain, suffering and loss. Some, unfortunately, experience this more than others. It is part of life on the physical plane. We can’t escape from it. To ease this burden, according to the Hindu tradition, the God Vishnu brought cannabis down from the Himalayan Mountains to give to mankind.

Editorial Board
Hope,

I am collecting material and mulling in my mind what I will say. I will have 30 minutes to counter 90 years of Government lies, but I like the challenge. I am putting together folders of stories, studies, I even printed an entire CN page with 15 comments, due to the wealth of information on that one.

Folders will be tailored to the members of the board that will attend. Med. Cannabis uses to the Health reporter, Leagal/Decrim. stories for the police beat, with LEAP stuff, too. Harm rediction to city beat.

FoM suggested a great topic for my 30 minutes of fame... harm reduction. I love it. A few other comments from some in here have helped me focus, more proof not needed that there are some very perceptive folks in here.

Sometime after the election, alas.

Thanks for asking.

suppressing unwanted memories
"Millions of people, mainly war veterans, suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, a psychiatric condition that can develop after experiencing life-threatening events."

Hundreds of thousands of Sudanese are being traumatized right now by Muslim fanatics in Sudan.

Millions of Africans were traumatized over the centuries by being placed into slave labor all over the world. Bought and sold at slave auctions right off the dock.

Romans enslaved Christians for being Christian. Traumatized, they spent their lives in catacombs.

The Hebrews were enslaved by the Egyptians for 400 years. Traumatized, they headed out into the desert. "Let my people go," implored Moses. The Exodus

The history of the world is replete with traumatized populations.

The US government traumatized alcohol imbibers during prohibition. Revenuers were chasing after booze runners for years. Now, cannabis imbibers are being traumatized day in and day out. It's been going on for decades. For centuries For eons For what?

Maybe that is why cannabis has a 9000 year history. It provides a fleeting moment of bliss in a world of hurt.

Suppressing unwanted memories? Use some cannabis. It provides an exodus from the world of hurt all of us experience everyday these days.

You can take some Prozac or some Zoloft and become a slave to the pharmaceutical industry. That can be done, too. However you want to do it. It's your traumatized life. The pharmaceutical industry profits handsomely from your trauma.

"Instead of smoking the drug, soldiers will drink THC dissolved in olive oil."

This sounds very much the way Marinol/Dronabinol is prepared. Coincidence? I think not.

THC suspension in an oil is intended to deny a way to collect and concentrate THC from several pills.

Funny how they don't try to do that to drugs like ... oh ... oxycondin? Vicodin? I suspect that few pharmaceuticals are manufactured in that way, THC, for sure, though, as you must know it is more dangerous to America than any other prohibited... or even ... legal drug.

yea thats a good idea
Pot is great for post traumatic stress disorder.

I should know - I barely survived an apallingly dysfunctional alcoholic backbiting backstabbing family and it helped tremendously.

Of course you cannot escape such a family, after I made it out of there and got my life together , they all joined the gang that poisons people and follows them around whistling - and then made up some evil stuff about me so they could collect bribes for having me tortured with poisons for the last 8 years.

Yep, pot is good for that post traumatic stuff. How come they don't poison drunks and backstabbing louts? Because they would have to poison themselves.
