By an overwhelming majority, HR 2, a House Resolution urging an end to federal prohibition of industrial hemp, passed the Montana House of Representatives Wednesday.
"This is an important step toward helping Montana farmers diversify their crops and open new markets," said Rep. Joan Hurdle (D-Billings), who sponsored the resolution. "Industrial hemp also provides numerous value-added opportunities to Montana's small businesses." Seventy percent of Montana adults who responded to a December survey said they supported the cultivation of hemp for industrial purposes. At least twenty-nine nations, including Canada, France, England, Germany, Japan, and Australia, allow farmers to cultivate the non-psychoactive crop for its fiber content.
